Parents Outraged By Leftist Propaganda At Virginia Tech Orientation

Penny Nance was excited to send her son to Virginia Tech. He had been accepted to the University’s Engineering program, and made the decision to join the Army ROTC program.

She also appreciated Tech’s rich military history, specifically the military parade field with the memorial to all known cadets who have lost their lives in military service.

But Nance’s high esteem for the school was crushed during something she describes as “extreme overtly leftist propaganda”.1

Virginia Tech Parents Fuming Over Liberal Sexuality Lectures

The University’s first orientation event separated students from parents in the auditorium. Nance then thought the program would begin with a memorial to the fallen cadets, or possibly recognition of the school’s values.

Nance was taken aback by the school’s choice to open with the implication that the University was built on land stolen from Native American tribes.

From there, Nance describes everything going downhill from “slightly bothersome to downright alarming”.

Two hours worth of speakers introduced themselves with gender fluid language. Speakers would introduce themselves and the pronouns they identified with, followed by heavy-handed diversity lectures. Nance explained that by this time the parents in the audience were getting more than annoyed.

Then Nance noticed that the orientation badges for the students also printed gender identity pronouns.

“The rest of the day followed the same two-track program, parents versus children, allowing the college to share different sets of information with each.” Nance explained.

Tech Pitches Two Different Orientation Speeches

For parents, the school described a hard-line policy against underage and excessive drinking. But for the students, they implied “wayward” behavior is normal in college, and that they would help students along the way. The prevailing line was “Be open to new experiences”.

“Parents, don’t be shocked if your kid comes home changed,” they intoned in the other room — this to the hundreds of parents, including myself, who had saved and sacrificed to send our children to this “top educational institution.” The attitude they conveyed was one of how “privileged” we should feel that they selected our children to attend such a fine and prestigious university. Lucky us.”

After dinner, parents were dismissed while the students sat through gender and sexuality lectures.

“Were they suggesting students ought to be fluidly ‘exploring’ their gender and sexuality, as if it were some expected adventure?” Nance stated. For a conservative mother this was a nightmare.

Another strong theme was the importance of identity politics for minorities, women, vegans, transgender persons, and non Juedo-Christian religious students.

“It’s apparently way cooler to be a minority trans woman with food allergies than simply to be an American college student” explained Nance.

And although the university took pains to order Halal and vegan food, they provided no certified kosher meals for Jewish students.

Nance Wants Virginians to Act Against Liberal Indoctrination

Virginia Tech is not the only university quick to embrace the language and practices of the political Left. Tech, and many other of the large schools adopting liberal ideals are public universities run on taxpayer dollars.

Nance explains that all taxpayers have a stake in what takes place at public universities. And alumni, and especially active students, have an even greater stake in the reputation of their school.

The forced display of pronouns, Nance says, is a gross violation of privacy rights as well.

“Why should a public university force a young man or woman struggling with identity issues, for example, to disclose those personal details and prominently display them on a name badge? Gender dysphoria is real, and the small number of students struggling deserve to be treated with dignity and kindness.”

Nance also questions why the First Amendment rights of students and staff are being violated by bullying them into using made-up pronouns. Nance stated “it bullies Christians, Muslims, and other students into violating their consciences to appease a small group of nonsensical identity politics warriors. “

The bottom line, Nance says, is that taxpayers should not foot the bill for liberal indoctrination.

What do you think?

Should Universities reject liberal policies and practices?

Or should schools focus more on gender identity language and diversity issues?
