Democrat Governor Ralph Northam has vetoed a bill that would have expanded access to concealed carry permits in Virginia.
The bill would have allowed nonresidents to get concealed handgun carry permits within 90 days of submitting an application to state police.
Virginia Citizens Defense League, a pro-gun organization advocating for the bill, argued the current process is too lengthy.
“As is, Virginia is charging $100 for a non-resident CHP and making applicants wait FIVE or SIX MONTHS to get their permit. Local government can do the same job for $15 and get it done usually well under 45 days” stated Virginia Citizens Defense League President, Philip Van Cleave.
The bill, HB 2253, was introduced by Delegate Brenda Pogge.
After narrowly passing through the General Assembly this session, it’s unlikely democrats will jump onboard to help pass a veto override.
Northam, who advocated for the “Red Flag” gun confiscation bill earlier this year, was largely expected to veto this bill.

“With well over one million dollars given to the Northam campaign for Governor, he’s getting some of those returns with veto after veto of pro-self-defense bills” stated Van Cleave. “Northam has vetoed a total of 11 pro-self-defense bills so far since he has been governor.”
Governor Northam stated he opposed the bill because it “would create public safety concerns.”1
